I got the pleasure of running a two boat trip with my good friend Captain Justin Hinote. We left the dock around 1pm with high hopes of a good bite. The south wind was gusting to about 20mph and it was a solid 3 to 5 ft in the gulf. For most anglers, this would be a clear sign to stay at the house. For us this ment the king mackerel bite would be on fire! King mackerel love rough water. I grew up tournament king fishing as a child and we would pray for choppy water so that the mackerel would be in a feeding frenzy.
After a wet and miserable boat ride we arrived at our first spot with a live well full of threadfin herring. It didn’t take long before drags started screaming. We had a 6 person limit of king mackerel in an hour of fishing. After filling our coolers we made the decision to come into the bay and catch some redfish. The redfish have been holding close to docks and structure on windy afternoons. For the remainder of the trip we let our clients pull nice slot reds from broken docks. Bull minnows were the bait of choice.
Stay tuned for more reports and pics!
