I have finally caught a break from life on the water and would like to share my latest experiences with everyone before my 2:30pm tee time. Hopefully I have rid myself of that nasty hook. Now for the fishing…
August can be a tricky month for a guide. The scorching, hot, water temperatures force us to change our conventional game plan. Targeting fish like Spanish Mackerel, Blue Fish, Jack Crevalle, Redfish, and Sharks is a must if you aim to have success. My goal is to locate a fish that will put up a great fight and give my customer the most enjoyment possible. Sure, I could beat up docks for a few keeper Redfish, or target structure for a handful of tasty flounder, but does that compare to bagging a drag screaming, 25 pound Jack? I think not! The majority of my clients travel to our area for a great experience. A sizable Pensacola Beach fish tends to leave them satisfied and eager for more.
During the month of August I will begin the morning stuffing the cooler with delicious Spanish Mackerel. Once we have enough for dinner the hunt for something that will pull some major drag gets underway. A 25 pound Bull Red usually does the trick, but if the Redfish are stingy then there are plenty of other species that are willing and ready. Lately I have seen a sufficient amount of large Jacks, black tip sharks, and Tarpon. It doesn’t take long to bring a smile to your clients face when battling a fish like that!
Today is August 15th and I have already been on the water 13 days this month. I couldn’t have asked for a smoother summer for Angler Up Charters. The clients have been excellent, we are finding plenty of fish, and have had no major disasters. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new 2400 Blazer Bay boat. The extra length and room will make charting that much easier. I have high hopes for a great fall.
