What a month! I just hate to see it go. My only hopes are that September will be just as good. I ran 25 trips during August and I am ready for some serious R&R….at least for a couple days! The problem at the moment is the the bite is so good that resting really isn’t an option. Who in their right mind want’s to take a day off when you can go head to head with a 100 pound Pensacola Bay Tarpon?? Not me! Even if the Tarpon don’t show up we are still catching a number of 25 pound Redfish, big Jack Crevalle, and LOTS of tasty Spanish Mackerel. Ok, Enough rambling….let me tell you about my most recent two trips.
The weather over the last 5 days has been demented to say the least. Drastic temperature changes usually screw with the barometric pressure causing the fish to feed during abnormal times. Sometimes they won’t feed at all. The cold front this week had me nervous, but fortunately luck was on my side. I started my last two trips scanning the bay for any activity I could find breaking the service of the water. For hours we went without seeing hardly anything at all. My guess was the pressure had the fish off their normal pattern. Each morning around 10:00am it was like someone turned on the dinner bell. Our bay went from a desert to an oasis in a matter of minutes. We were in panic mode one minute and the next we were watching 25 pound Red Fish ram their heads into the side of my vessel while hooking Spanish Mackerel and Tarpon. It was epicness in it’s truest form. Although we never landed a Tarpon it was still a blast battling a such a powerful fish. Both trips ended with lots of laughs and great stories.
